The great thing about this is that you can choose the tool you use (as
you point out, this is also something of a nightmare).

The native format for translating strings in Qt is .ts - which you can
translate using Qt Linguist. There's a good overview to using it here:

Basically, translatable strings get automatically extracted to a .ts
file, and that file contains more metadata than you normally get in a
.po file.

But you're not reauired to use Linguist, and KDE uses good ol' gettext
and .po files, I believe.

Personally, I would recommend using Qt Linguist for Qt apps. It's a nice
tool, with a good toolchain, and its translations will work on both
Linux and Symbian (and that was the point, right?) - if you're using the
Symbian Locale stuff, that will (obviously) only work on Symbian.
