Maybe this is one requirement of the forum software we didn't thoroughly
communicate? Or maybe it was just outweighed by a few other features. I know
that Drupal has forum<->email integration, but didn't have some other
features. 

We did leave the forum decision as a potential revisit at some point. Let's
first see what email vBulletin can offer though.
