I think it is unlikely, as Nokia will obviously be making sure that the Linux
Foundation does nothing to prevent them imposing the restriction in their
devices that having purchased the device you have to allow it to register with
My Nokia, and provide unspecified personal information, before you can use the
device (see http://wiki.maemo.org/PR1.2_compulsory_My_Nokia_subscription for
more information on this). Microsoft's decision to password protect SD cards
seems minor in comparison.
The fact that MeeGo brand compliance will not prevent that sort of unethical
behaviour from device manufacturers is the reason I stopped all my
contributions to MeeGo and Maemo, I now only plan to contribute community
applications, not to the testing or development of the base platform or tools.
A purely personal decision, of course.
I am sure the meego-dev participants would prefer us to take any further
discussion of this issue to the -community list.
